Where to buy foreign fruits and vegetables in Nigeria (Lagos) by Dobby's Signature

Greetings,

From time to time on the blog and on my BBM channel I get questions like where can I get kiwis from in Nigeria? Where can I get plums from in Nigeria? Where can I get papaya from in Nigeria?

It's often difficult to answer these questions as I do not live in Nigeria but I try to answer as much as I can by directing them to the popular shopping malls in Lagos such as Shoprite, which is perhaps the only shopping mall I know of Lol!

I even had one of my many little sisters say " Sis your blog is not africa friendly as we can not get the fruits you use on your blog"  Lol! Now we can't have that I said to myself and this pushed me to do some research on where the foreign fruits are been sold in Nigeria. Now I know they exist but they come at exorbitant prices.

Whilst doing my research I came across a few details here and there but finally I hit jackpot when I came across Dobby's Signature blog http://www.dobbyssignature.com

Yellow Watermelon Surprise!!

Have you ever seen or tasted a yellow watermelon?

I didn't even know they existed!

All my life ....." sounds like I am about to type my bio there " ...ha ha!! All my life all I have ever seen or tasted was a red watermelon and we all know how delicious and refreshing they are.

Red Watermelon

Warning: If you're my friend or family and you ever go fruit shopping and you happen to live nearby do not make the mistake of telling me you've gone fruit shopping because I would pay you a visit to see what goodies you've bought and definitely help myself to some of your fruits purchases ...with your permission of course ha ha!

On Saturday my sister made that mistake. She called and said " I have just gotten back from the fruit market" and then she made mention of all the fruits and bargains she bought and made an even bigger mistake of sending me a picture of all her purchases lined up on her kitchen counter.

As I zoomed in I spotted a few mangoes and a big watermelon, in my head I knew I was going to get half of that watermelon. I asked if she was going out soon and she replied no I'll be home for a while.

In less than 45mins I was at her door..... Lol!! she knew why I had come and had bagged and frozen all her fruit into the freezer. As I always say  "ditch the ice and freeze your fruits" . The only fruits on the counter were the mangoes and the juicy watermelon.

As we stood in the kitchen making small talk she picked up her big sharp knife and ripped into the watermelon and as she cut it wide open we both stared at each other blankly...

OMG!! I shouted you have been scammed Lol!!....this is a yellow watermelon... don't taste it I exclaimed!! I grabbed my phone and went unto Google, typed in yellow watermelon and clicked on images...lo and behold there they were... Yellow watermelons looking all yellow and delicious mixed with the red watermelon. It was hilarious!!

As you'd expect I demanded for half. She refused to share her mangoes though, her excuse was that she only bought 2 mangoes for £1 and needed them for her smoothies, I wasn't pleased but hey I got half of the juicy watermelon so hooray!!

I can not wait to make a yellow watermelon smoothie with it!

Yellow Watermelon

I am curious to know ... have you ever seen or tasted a yellow watermelon?

What were your initial thoughts when you saw one?

Am I the only one who has never seen a watermelon? Make me feel better please and tell me that you are just like me and have never seen a yellow watermelon ha ha!!

Till the next time.....

Mango & Grapefruit Smoothie

Grapefruits are known for that sour-sweet taste that it produces and I can bet you lots of people will say they don't like grapefruits due to it's peculiar taste.

Mangoes  are generally sweet although the taste and texture of the flesh varies. Some mangoes have a soft pulp texture similar to an overripe plum while others are firm like an avocado or cantaloupe. This fruit compared to grapefruits is much preferred.

I have a very simple recipe that I would you to try with these two interesting fruits.

Ingredients

  • 1 mango
  • 2 grapefruits
  • a teaspoon of honey
  • splash of single cream light
  • Ice cubes ( not a regular occurrence for me)

Fun Smoothie Ideas for Kids

Healthy, homemade smoothies are the fastest way to feed your children with the recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

It's sometimes hard getting your children to eat their fruits and vegetable but we all know that kids love ice cream or anything solid and sweet so why not incorporate some desserts into your kids smoothies.

The other day my friend dropped my 5 year old Godson round and asked me to babysit. After a long day of games and running around we were worn out.I asked my Godson if he would like a smoothie and he asked " What's a smoothie"? Is it ice cream? I thought Oh boy how do I explain this to a 5 year old without putting him off fruits and vegetables for life what a smoothie is!

I replied not quite but it's your favourite fruits and vegetables blended together to taste like ice cream. He frowned and said "I don't like broccoli, sprouts or raspberries" they're bitter but I like grapes and strawberries ...so I thought hmm how do I convince my 5 year old Godson to have a smoothie filled with one of the fruits he doesn't like?

I looked in the cupboard and found these three flavours of the "Angel delight whip up with fresh milk dessert mix"  which I had used not long ago to entertain my friends kids and had an idea.

  • Angel Delight :Strawberry Flavour
  • Angel Delight :Butterscoth Flavour
  • Angel Delight :Chocolate Flavour

These flavours can be whipped up with fresh milk as it says on the pack to make a fluffy dessert for kids and there's no need to add sugar.

I decided to add the strawberry flavour to a  blender with frozen strawberries, cherries, banana and that raspberry that he mentioned that he didn't like to make him a smoothie.

Ingredients
  • 4 frozen strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 -2 cups of milk
  • 6 frozen cherries
  • handful of frozen raspberries
  • 1-2 tablespoons of the Angel delight strawberry flavour

Instructions
  • Cut the strawberries, bananas ,cherries, raspberries and pop into the blender
  • Add mik then top it up by adding  two spoons of the strawberry flavour delight
  • Blend until smooth
  • Pour into glass cup
  • Serve cold

Verdict

My Godson loved it and scooped it with a spoon saying it tasted like ice- cream, he even asked if he could have the angel delight strawberry flavour to take home with him. RESULT!!

Give it a try, the kids will love it!

Watermelon & Banana Juice

We've had some beautiful weather today in London and watermelon is the best fruit to cool you down after a long hot day in the sunshine.

Watermelons are a great fruit to help you hydrate and cool down in the summer heat. Also, since it's mostly made up of water, watermelon makes a refreshing cool drink.

Despite being mainly water and sugar, watermelons are actually a very good source of vitamin c (which provides protection against immune system deficiencies) and vitamin A -which promotes good eye site.

Today we will be making a very simple and yet refreshing watermelon and banana juice.

Ingredients
  • 2 bananas
  • half of a watermelon
  • Ice cubes (I rarely use ice cubes as my fruits are always frozen)

Instructions
  • Remove the watermelon from the skin and place in a blender, cut the bananas and put in the blender, add the ice and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into glass cup and serve cold.
